Weight Training Over 50 – My Interview On The Truth Not Trends Podcast

Recently I had the pleasure of hanging out with my friends Liam Bauer and Jesse Schmidt for an in-depth discussion of weight training over 50 on their popular fitness podcast Truth Not Trends.

As the name of their show implies, the goal of the podcast is to teach people how to maximize their strength as safely and efficiently as possible. They have over 100 episodes on their site with a ton of really cool guests, discussing a wide range of topics like strength training for seniors, fitness fads gimmicks

and trends, nutrition and weight control,  and of course weight training over 50.

Liam and Jesse also run their own personal training studio TNT Strength in Oakland California, so if you live in or visit Oakland, that is THE place to work out.

As they say on their website:

TNT stands for Truth Not Trends and we are a team of evidence-based strength coaches committed to helping people become the best versions of themselves through supervised strength training. We have decades of experience working with everyone from professional athletes up to adults in their 90s.

I really enjoyed discussing how to get stronger after 50 with Liam and Jesse on the show!

Here are some excerpts from our discussion:

We’re always talking about sarcopenia these days, which is age-related muscle loss, but the current research is showing that strength is the determining factor of longevity.  As strength goes down, you’re length of time here on the planet goes down right along with it.

There are studies that have been done, if someone can’t sit down on the floor and stand up unassisted, they’re not going to be around a lot longer, when people lose that ability to be able to just sit down and stand up all alone.

There’s direct correlations with all this strength-related stuff, and it’s more important than cardiovascular fitness, and all these other things that we’ve been programmed to believe are more important.

If you’re losing strength, you’re losing life, in a sense.
